Though gravely wounded, Gaia still had force and foresight to give her body to be transformed from one sphere into this other, much much larger but only a few hundred meters thick, with Venus moving inside you know, and Mars moving outside. It was tricky balancing the gravity, but Pitag pulled it off without much help from the humans' computers, which had suffered great damage when the Markites sliced old Earth.
The earth has been around for a long, long time even before we flattened it into a film-thin spear... no, sphere. Spread it around the sun to completely absorb... no, not completely, that was Pitag's great insight, not block old Sol, but just dim it with enough light passing through the skin to appear a dwarf, except for the ecliptic belt which is wide open to shine full strength on the outer planets -- don't want them to get cold. What? Oh, yes. We also left it open at the poles because old man Helios warned us he needs to breathe there.
