street vendors pass
under sweet burdens
a dolar diez pesos la paquetethe beggar on this corner
leans close to
warn you
be careful, señor, hay
ladrones aquí
here there be thieves, it
might be said in cornersof maps
tierra incognita of the
soul
es decir, carácter
or
personality
unknown
in crowded blocks
where evening shuffles past
between work and home
office, shop, cantina, hotel
home
home
unseen land beyond police van
spotlights
promised paradise apart from
bar door hustlers
pulling -- jalando
on their sidewalk clients
come'on in take a look
gotta lota pretty naked ladiesdancing
justfor
you
but no, you must
insist on measuringthe land
with paper and pen
from a waiting bench
beside the pay phoneat taxi site
where one, then
a second
places their calls
to yet another third
and equally unknown
world .
I won't be writing here for a few weeks. Need to finish my filmscript for the screenplay contest. See you in February, I think. Bye... and wish me luck!
