Shining Darkness.
Shining darkness on five a.m. streets
earliest traffic whispersred neon crosses
above cathedral .Cat on top storefront roof meow meow meow.
Man on corner. Dog watching.Car radio blasting @ 3rd and D cliche
bestride the bakery that never closes. This is the corner full of action where
latin city awakens before dawn.Brown man sweeps corner while
white food cart trundles past.Cream & Yellow route taxis to the
beaches - Playas de Tijuana - await
their morning crowd of housekeepers
and gardeners hustling off to work
for middle class & rich houses.Poet lingers and scribbles notebook, then moves
on east toward Constitution and Revolution.Between these two main streets, still silent,
a wig store is brilliantly lit; but nearby in
darkened arcade entrance, seven bodies sleep
under their dwarvish grey-brown blankets.Across Third Street empty traffic
the herds of gold & white taxis
wait for morning customers to
Otay factories and maquiladoras.Soon, soon, soon, they will come.
Turn the corner onto Revolution. One
lone taco cart shines its welcome. Skies
still hang dark overhead. Thursday pre-dawn
bars stand deathly silent. Ain't no weekend
morning-after crudo awakening, this is q u i e t .Last taxis whistle for customers.
The streetlight flickers on and off.
Sanborn's looks open. Yes. It is.Go in for c o f f e e .
. Ssssssss mmmmmmmmmm zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzAP .
