When Maargaret was about ten, her mother brought several of the children to San Diego for the winter months because they had been ill. There the mother's father and several younger children had settled. At that time she decided that she would return to San Diego to live when she was older. She graduated from Chase County High School in 1907. She taught briefly before moving to San Diego at the invitation of her aunt Mary (mother's youngest sister), about 1908 or 1909. She worked in a lemon packaging plant and then did office work. After residing at first with her aunt Mary, she moved to the YWCA (always an independent soul). With several other young women she went rowing on the bay -- a popular sport at that time. She met men from the Rockwell Field rowing club -- Army personnel who were members of the 1st Aero squadron of the U.S. Army signal corps (from whence was born the army air corps [later air force]). Their secdong childe Marjorie Oletha Payne (1920-Living) was born Se[ptember 4, 1920 in San Diego, California. By this time Charles had become captain payne. Margaret remained a homemaker for the rest of her live. She was quite proud of her membership in the D.A.R.. She wrote poetry and played the piano and organ and held strong opinions. Before she died in San Diego, February 10, 1984, she saw her hero Ronald Reagan elected President. She was interned beside her husband at Fort Rosecrans national cemetery.
