22 November 2001. Thanksgiving. |
The day of action of giving thanks. The day of turkey. Ah yes.
Tere comes with me. She has the day off. Didn't I tell you she actually works for an American company? She's their import/export administrator in Tijuana. Yeah. So the Christmas party we're going to will be at a restaurant in Hillcrest, in San Diego. Do you want chicken or beef or fish?
Today is Turkey.
The line isn't too bad. We're early. Very early. Get to the border by nine-thirty. Maybe a forty-five minute wait. Walk through. Take the trolley up to central San Diego. Take the bus up to my parents' neighborhood. Spend a few hours visiting before heading out to the sister's and brother-in-law's house in Jamul. Beautiful area. Oak trees and the little creek below their house. They have sheep. Baa baa baa. And one chicken left in the hen house, with a rabbit. Used to have many more.
Seventeen people at the dinner, including my son and my sister's kids and some cousins and the parents.
Later, tonight, after eating, Tere and I will go for a little walk. The bats and nighttime birds are whistling and chirping.
Even later, we go home to Tijuana. A cousin is really really kind and gives us a ride all the way to the border. Cross over, searching for my friend Angel the taxidriver -- first friend I made in Tijuana almost three years ago...
He will be mad at me. You haven't come to see me in how long??? *Sigh*
We drive Tere home. Then all the way back through the city to my place downtown. Chatting and jabbering all the way. It's good to see Angel again. It has been too long. I promise him and I promise myself that I will see him at least every fifteen days.
I'll keep you posted.
