Daniel's Journal

by Daniel Charles Thomas

16 August 2001.

Thursday. Spent four evenings this week at poetry workshop at CECUT with Gloria Hervitz. Thanks to Noe Carrillo for the invitation. Tonight, the last night, she read some of her work, Migrations, to us. Rather good verse. Rather well read.

All in Spanish. The workshop and the poetry... no, that's not true, she has some verses in English.

But practically everything in Spanish. This is why I moved here. To experience the language of the culture from one extreme to another. From the bus to the classroom and everything in between.

Gloria had some good suggestions for the poems I read. And loved my dogs.

to all of us she said many things, many references from other poets talking about the process of working the poem.

poeta, no digas la rosa. hazlo florecer en el poema.

poet, don't say "the rose." make it blossom in the poem.

a quote she said several times. I forget who she said said it.

I read vivencias monumentales on Monday, que huele el rio on Wednesday, and my dogs tonight. All in Spanish.

{...DECEMBER 2001: Links-R-Done; but Vivencias in English....}

Through the days I took several pages of notes. But how to tell you? How to explain? Notes won't do it. How to say what a splendid moment it was, four nights of splendid moments. And how very very critical she can be, and then at the end, this last night, to hear her read and to see that she has applied the same critique to her own work....

I must remember to send her the dogs she asked a copy.
