Tijuana Gringo

by Michael Thomas

1 May 2001 -- Tuesday.

In the restaurant, Agustin's restaurant, my landlord's restaurant. I sit eating my tortilla soup and listening. The table near me two men and two women sit talking. One mentions the Baby Rock Disco in the river zone. What was that about that shooting the other night?

Oh yes, says a man, night before last, well, yesterday morning before dawn. You didn't read the papers?

No, not even watch television. We were in Ensenada for the weekend.

Ah, well... it seems two young men came out of the disco around four or three or something in the morning, and as they got into their car -- a Range Rover it was, very popular with drug dealers you know -- they were shot to death by AK-47s.

Oh. That's a powerful weapon, no?

Yes. It doesn't matter what kind of car you are in, if bullets from an AK-47 come spraying at you, they are going to rip through metal and then tear your flesh into shreds.

Oh please, Mario....

But wait, that's not the most interesting part. It seems that the Federal Judicial Police were riding with the killers.

What?

Yes! There were two vehicles reported that attacked the one vehicle that was shot. Only a moment later a police officer stopped one of them -- imagine this, one police officer with his little pistol, ha, and he sees the AK-47s pointed in his direction... he jumped behind a wall and the two cars drove away. One was a black Jeep Cherokee. And only a moment later a black Jeep Cherokee was stopped a few blocks later by other police, and out jump Federal Judicial officers, waving their credentials at the police and shouting they are on official business.

Ohmigaud I go away for a weekend and another round of shootings. So who was it?

Who is it ever? Killers killing other killers.

When will this stop? What is going on here?

It is a war of terror. Only God knows which side is winning.
