Tijuana Gringo

by Michael Thomas

30 Marzo 2001.

Seven floors above downtown Tijuana
Luis throws another party. First, from
six-thirty until eightish, guests discuss
the decolonization of culture.

Then the band arrives. Saxtaco rocks
their versatile mix of hot jazz latin
R & B. Forget lables, gringo, just enjoy.

Maria couldn't go -- she had to return
home to sleep for work tomorrow. We
were walking on Revolución after
a movie at Cinema Latina when
I looked up and remembered the
party above the sleazy bars, where a
hint of music drifted down from on high.

Walk me to my taxi -- she said -- then you
go without me. We had seen the Tom Hanks
picture from last year on that lost island.

At the party... so many, so many...
drink and eat and talk and dance and struggle
to listen over all the music sound.
Ask Elizabeth and Gerardo if
they could work with me in poetry read.

Maybe. I will walk home at one a.m.
