Weeks from now, when I will know the outcome already, and try to reconstruct this process of writing for the contest, falling dead before a firing squad of self-criticism, it will be impossible to discover either ice or fire. Some say the world will end in either (Frost), many years later will remember his father a conocer hielo (Garcia Marquez). Meanwhile I am only Multiple Drafts without dates, drafts with dates, curious notes indicating revisions, yet other notes cancelling those changes and then re-changing them backward, forwards, or completely dismissing the verse from the manuscript to languish.
Tonight Maria takes me to tequila at Cesar's Hotel bar. Something seems radically different about this place. Like last time, remember? Then I remember....
Then we go to have hamburgers on Paseo de los Heroes, at a place totally hip and young and full of Mexicans. She treats me, and I am blown away when the waiters suddenly come forward with a glass of tequila and the music plays Las Mananitas and everyone applauds. I toast Maria and toss the drink back with one gulp. Ahhhhh....
