Tijuana Gringo

Thursdaeg, 14 September 2000 -- Afternoon

I buy a new notebook to write. Another chance to begin again, another chance to express a fresh page. To remember and to create. I write while I eat a late, late breakfast in the early, early afternoon. Scrambled eggs with chorizo at Bibi's Fuente de Sodas on the south side of Fourth between Ninos Heroes (C) and D.

Lidice Figueroa -- a Baja California artist I've met -- told me about this place several months ago, and now, at last, I have found it. Her mother, directrix of the city gallery, or something like that with IMAC (Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura), is eating lunch here, right now, today. That's how late my breakfast is. She asks me if I've seen the exhibition in the gallery, yes, la galeria de la ciudad, asi se llama. Hijos de la calle. Fotografia. Yes, I say, with truth. But by the time this page gets posted on the web it will be closed and something else opened.

*Sigh* I really need to get more up to date! But I don't say anything like that.

"Yes. I have seen it."

"Ah, how suave."

"You know, it was your daughter who recommended this restaurant to me."

"Oh yes, we always eat here," Mrs. Lewis says.

The writer smiles, imagining how he will put these words into this Michael's mouth.

But you already know how much I like the family restaurant scene here in Tijuana. I'll see the owner a month from now at the Casa de Cultura birthday party, up on the hills, when they open a series of exhibitions, including photos from Tijuana in 1965. I've already seen the flyers posted in windows around town. But by then I'll have eaten here several times.
